Mindfulness
What is Mindfulness Counseling? Mindfulness Therapies are designed to deliberately focus one’s attention on the present experience in a way that is non-judgmental. By learning to experience the present moment as it is, we develop the ability to step away from habitual, often unconscious emotional and physiological reactions to everyday events, to see things as they really are and respond to them wisely. Mindfulness based approaches are aimed at relieving the symptoms of psychological stress, negative mental states and physical pain. In the past 30 years, the effects of mindfulness meditation have been studied by medical doctors, neuroscientists, and psychologists and have been found to be helpful in a wide variety of mental disorders.
Techniques employed in Mindfulness Therapies may include:
-
discussions to bring awareness to how thoughts are connected to emotional states, physical sensations, urges, and behaviors
-
experiential exercises
-
role playing
-
positive reinforcement
-
breathing methods
-
journal writing
-
gentle yoga movements
-
guided relaxation
-
various forms of meditation
Mindfulness therapies are used to treat anxiety, addictive behaviors, depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, stress, pain and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is also helpful for those who have chronic illness, pain and cancer.
We know the term mindfulness is becoming more popular and a lot of people are using it to describe their counseling services without being formally trained in mindfulness skills. The Trillium Wellness Center is different. Many of our staff have extensive experience and training in mindfulness practices, and we hold certifications in a variety of Mindfulness Theories. Some of us were even trained by the creators of the theories. Review staff profile pages for details about their specialties and trainings. There are several different types of mindfulness therapies and each intervention is used to treat specific conditions. Please review our Therapies page for more information.
